Joseph Mallord William Turner Two Cart Horses 1807

Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Folio 40 Recto:
Two Cart Horses 1807
D06719
Turner Bequest CI 92
Pencil on off-white wove paper, 118 x 187 mm
Inscribed by an unknown hand in pencil ‘CI 92’ bottom right
Stamped in black ‘CI 92’ bottom right

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
With folios 42, 44 and 51 verso (D06716, D06717 and D06718; Turner Bequest CI 89, 90, 91), which were then on the Third Loan Collection tour, mounted in frames, Finberg allocated this to the Boats, Ice sketchbook, thinking that they ‘possibly belonged to it’ despite their different size. They were subsequently bound in the present book, from which leaves had certainly been removed and which is much the more likely source on grounds of subject matter. The paper is badly discoloured from exposure.
Verso:
Blank, with traces of gum at the corners from having been laid down
