With a summary indication of the skyline of Bywell beyond the bridge piers, this is a similar view, from slightly closer to the bridge and castle, to the sketch on folio 81 verso (D12424), which stands at one end of the sequence of studies at Bywell, running to folio 88 verso (D12438); for the history of the castle and bridge, see the entry for folio 81 verso.
There is an ink wash study from the same angle among Northumberland views made in about 1778 by Samuel Hieronymus Grimm (British Library, London, Additional MS 15543).1
