Turner made a large number of drawings with the River Tiber as the central focus. This sketch depicts the view looking upstream with St Peter’s in the distance and the trees and buildings crowning the Janiculum Hill on the left. The river is indicated only as a blank space in the foreground. The artist’s viewpoint appears to be from the Ponte Sisto with the Villa Farnesina on the left bank. The sketch spills over slightly onto the opposite sheet of the double-page spread, see folio 30 verso (D16210; Turner Bequest CLXXXVIII 29a).
