Although the location of this sketch has not been conclusively identified, the details of the landscape containing a mixture of trees, buildings and an ornamental vase, and similarities to another series of sketches on folios 62–63 (D16267–D16270; Turner Bequest 61–62) suggests that the subject may be the gardens of the Villa Borghese, Rome. The same vase also appears in the view on the opposite sheet of the double-page spread, see folio 81 (D16304; Turner Bequest CLXXXVIII 80). For a general discussion of the Borghese Gardens see folio 62 (D16267; Turner Bequest CLXXXVIII 61).
