The artist has ruled perspective lines to assist his drawing of the complex group of Morton’s Gateway, with the Archbishop’s Palace beyond, and St Mary’s Parish Church, Lambeth, to the right. A closely related view in watercolour, including accomplished and lively figures, was exhibited as Turner’s first submission to the Royal Academy in 1790 (Indianapolis Museum of Art, Pantzer Collection).1 In 1909 Finberg hazarded that the subject might be Pope’s Tower at Stanton Harcourt.
