Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Folio 30 Recto:
A Broad Landscape with Low Hills c.1795
D00491
Turner Bequest XXV 30
Watercolour on white wove paper, 130 x 205 mm
Inscribed by John Ruskin in red ink ‘30’ bottom right
Stamped in black ‘XXV 30’ bottom right

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
The subject is treated more atmospherically than the panorama on folio 28 recto (D00489). The works (perhaps a lime kiln?) with smoking chimneys in the foreground hollow, the hills and the glimpse of a distant lake suggest a landscape farther from London.
