Carew is among the finest castles of Wales, yet it receives only a cursory mention in the itinerary at the front of this book (D40554), where it is said to be ‘2 Miles from Pembroke’; in fact the distance is about ten miles. This drawing was later used for a subject in the series Picturesque Views in England and Wales (Manchester Art Gallery),1 engraved in 1832. There is a copy of Turner’s pencil drawing in the Fogg Museum, Harvard University, Cambridge, MA. Another study of the castle is on folio 25 recto (D00577; Turner Bequest XXVI 24), and on folio 27 recto (D00579; XXVI 26) Turner made a drawing of the castle mill.
The drawing was made with the page turned horizontally.
