See Ruskin’s note on the verso of folio 26 (D00578; Turner Bequest XXVI 25) opposite. The Castle Mill at Carew is of interest as a rare tidal mill, for which records date from the first half of the sixteenth century. It existed considerably earlier, as Turner’s drawing demonstrates: the structure he records incorporates a medieval fortified wall. The building was completely reconstructed in the early nineteenth century, some time after his visit.

Blank; stamped in brown ink with Turner Bequest monogram.
