Joseph Mallord William Turner Ross-on-Wye: The Market Place 1795

Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Folio 54 Recto:
Ross-on-Wye: The Market Place 1795
D00609
Turner Bequest XXVI 55
Pencil on white wove paper, 203 x 264 mm
Inscribed by A.J. Finberg in red ink ‘55’ top right
Stamped in black ‘XXVI 55’ bottom left, descending vertically
Another view of Ross market place is folio 65 recto (D00621; Turner Bequest XXVI 67). A view of ‘Ross Market House’ was ordered by ‘Mr Lambirt’ (see the list of ‘Order’d Drawings’, D40557); no watercolour of the subject is known.
Finberg noted that this leaf ‘was cut out and loose’, conjecturing that this was its correct position in the book.1 It is not certain whether the ‘Street Scene’ in the Loan Collection lists is to be identified with this drawing, but the sheet has evidently been on exhibition; witness the severe burning of the paper by light.
The drawing was made with the page turned horizontally.

Finberg 1909, I, p.52.
