Finberg noted that the sheet was difficult to date precisely, and grouped it with miscellaneous drawings of about 1802–10. The present placing seems probably correct, however. The study of a boat may have been drawn in connection with the subject of The Rising Squall, Hot Wells (see Tate D00389; Turner Bequest XXIII O), or one of the other shipping subjects of 1792–3.
Technical notes:
The sheet is conspicuously discoloured, stained and spattered with black ink.

Blank; stamped in brown ink with Turner Bequest monogram; paint and oil stains.
