Both studies are accomplished, the figures especially; but they are in different styles and treat subjects of different scales. The drawing of foliage makes use of contrasting density of pencil-stroke, as do the studies of a donkey’s head in Tate D00367 (Turner Bequest XXII N). The sheet may date from somewhat later; Finberg placed it with miscellaneous drawings of about 1796.
