This page contains three distinct drawings. At the top of the sheet is a detailed study of the façade of a building. The precise location remains unidentified. However, the architectural details such as the arcade and the upper-floor loggia, are reminiscent of the characteristic style of Piazza del Mercato (Market Square) in the city of Domodossola. See also folio 81 (D14300; Turner Bequest CLXXIV 80).
Also on the page are two distant views of the Swiss Alps seen from the road to the Simplon Pass (for a general discussion of Turner’s journey see the introduction to the sketchbook, and also the introduction to the Passage of the Simplon sketchbook, Tate, Turner Bequest CXCIV).
