This page contains three distinct landscape sketches. The uppermost vista appears to depict a view on the River Saône, probably somewhere between Mâcon and Trévoux, see folios 30 and 39 respectively (D14036 and D14052). Turner used the river to travel south between Chalon-sur-Saône and Lyon and made a number of drawings from the water. The precise location here is currently unidentified although the view includes a church with a pointed spire on the left and a building with a round tower on the right, and the same tower appears in the smaller study in the bottom left-hand corner.
The subject of the sketch of the house in the bottom right-hand corner is unknown.
