This careful and assured drawing depicts the town of Trévoux, located on the River Saône approximately fifteen miles north of Lyon. Turner’s viewpoint is from the left bank of the river with the quayside and the town above, including just left of centre, the old church of Saint-Symphorien, rebuilt at the end of the nineteenth century. In the foreground of the sketch the artist has included a group of three women who appear to be washing clothes.
Turner first visited Trévoux in 1802 and a related sketch can be found in the France, Savoy, Piedmont sketchbook (Tate D04426; Turner Bequest LXXIII 34). His return there in 1819 resulted in more detailed studies, see folios 39 and 41 (D14052 and D14054).
