Turner has used the vertical height of this sketchbook page in order to capture the grand scale of this mountainous or hilly landscape, looking through a deep ravine or valley. The location is tentatively identified as the entrance to the Voie Sarde (Sardinian Way), a historic road which led through a natural canyon in the Chartreuse Mountains near the village of Les Échelles in Savoy. For further discussion of this road see folio 70 (D14106).
