This sketch represents a view in the Maurienne Valley in Savoy which Turner journeyed through on the way to the Pass of Mont Cenis. The location is not conclusively identified but the artist has annotated the composition with the position of a glacier and there appears to be a waterfall streaming down the steep slopes on the right.
