This sketch represents a view in the Maurienne Valley which lies in Savoy approximately twenty miles east of Chambéry. Turner journeyed through the valley on the way to the Pass of Mont Cenis. The location is not conclusively identified but the river winding its way through the heart of the composition is the River Arc.
