This page contains three sketches relating to Turner’s journey through the Maurienne valley in Savoy, en route to the Mont Cenis pass. The two uppermost studies depict views of St-Jean-de-Maurienne, the capital city of the valley. The top scene is very rough but appears to represent a general topographical from a distance, whilst the middle composition includes a vista from within the city centre including the Romanesque belltower of the cathedral of St John the Baptist.
