For Bolton Castle in this sketchbook see folio 17 recto (D11468). Here, Turner shows the north-east corner, with Castle Bolton Church in the foreground, continued to the left in a few lines on D40840, opposite. The north-east tower of the castle is missing. It collapsed on the evening of 19 November 1761, reportedly from damage sustained in the seventeenth century, during the Civil War.
Turner sketched similar views in the Yorkshire 2 sketchbook (Tate D11252, D11251; Turner Bequest CXLV 126, 125a; drawn in this order), which accompanied him on the same tour.
