The main sketch records the view of Brignall Church from near the bank of the River Greta looking upstream. Turner drew a second sketch of the same material, but from a higher and slightly more distant viewpoint, on the verso (D11488).
The site of Brignall Church lies on the west bank of the Greta about a mile and a half south of Rokeby, and may be accessed along about a mile of footpath starting from Greta Bridge. The medieval church drawn by Turner was demolished in 1834 when much of the stone was carried off to build a replacement on higher ground in the village. The original site, however is readily recognisable.
