Here Turner records the view of Egglestone Abbey (for which see folio 30 verso; D11490) from outside the former Canon’s Dorter, looking down the River Tees, with Egglestone Mill below to the left, the castellation of Abbey Bridge in the further distance, right, and the square profile of Rokeby Park in the distance along the line of the river. Turner revisits almost exactly the same viewpoint as a sketch made in 1797 in the North of England sketchbook (Tate D40565; Turner Bequest XXXIX 90 verso).
