Mossdale Head is at the head of Wensleydale, about two miles north-west of Hawes. This sketch is taken from the road between Hawes and Sedbergh road, looking south up Mossdale Beck to the lower falls, left of centre, sketched by Turner on folios 32 verso (D40861) and 33 verso (D11576; Turner Bequest CXLVIII 31a), and the upper falls, just above centre, the subject of folios 38 recto–37 verso (D11549–D11550; Turner Bequest CXLVIII 16–17). The present writer dates Turner’s sketches at Mossdale to Saturday 27 July 1816.
As the drawing is currently presented in the sketchbook it appears inverted in relation to the main sequence of subjects.
