This is the continuation to the right of the panorama of Hackfall on the previous double-page spread, folios 40 verso–41 (D10943–D10944). The view is taken from near the Rustic Temple with the main spread recording the view east to Magdalen Woods on the far bank, with the River Ure sweeping round at our feet from left to right, and the present sketch the right bank of the Ure looking downstream, with the rocks of the Rock Walk visible through the trees. The Large Farnley sketchbook (Tate D09054; Turner Bequest CXXVIII 38) has a detailed drawing of the landscape recorded in the right half of this spread and its continuation on folio 42 (D10945), as seen from a similar angle but from the higher vantage point of the Banqueting House, which appears to be the culmination of Turner’s explorations at Hackfall in 1816.
