This sketch is taken from the River Ure, immediately west of the Marmion Tower, with the church tower almost completely hidden behind, and the bridge to the right. It is a closer view from a similar angle to that on the previous double-page spread, running across folios 43 verso to the recto of the present leaf (D10947–D10948). The Yorkshire 3 sketchbook, which Turner used on the same tour, has a sketch of West Tanfield Bridge from the opposite side, looking upstream (Tate D11395; Turner Bequest CXLVI 16a). Details of the projecting window on the east face, the church tower and the east windows of the church, top right, relate to the sketch in the Yorkshire 3 sketchbook, rather than to those here.
For West Tanfield in the present sketchbook see folio 43 verso (D10947).
