Here Turner has drawn, inverted in relation to main numbered sequence of subjects in the sketchbook, the Mont Blanc chain, with the Dent del Gigante, looking up the Val d’Aosta over the Pont de la Villette, just above Courmayeur, with crags and the church spire at La Saxe to the right and the houses of La Villette to the left. Turner sketched a similar view (Tate D34188; Turner Bequest CCCXLII 4) but from a bridge just below Courmayeur, and on the recto of the present page (D29104; Turner Bequest CCXCIII 37), showing the view from this bridge down the valley. Another drawing in this sketchbook (D29077; Turner Bequest CCXCIII 23a) records the view over the bridge to Courmayeur and Dolonne.
