This is one of two sketches of an unidentified mansion on a rise above a river; there is a view from closer to on folio 17 verso (Tate D18550; Turner Bequest CCXI 19a). Turner has inscribed various letters and numbers over different parts of the picture. They may represent different colours according to the artist’s own idiosyncratic system. The sketch continues at the left on folio 20 (Tate D18555; Turner Bequest CCXI 20).
