This page has been used for numerous figures studies, mainly of French women who almost all wear the distinctive Normandy hats that Turner took such an interest in during this tour (see Tate D24502; Turner Bequest CCLVIII 2). The figures also include two soldiers at the top centre, a woman with a baby at the top left, a woman carrying a basket at the bottom left, one tending to a donkey with two jugs in its pannier, and, towards the bottom right, a woman who is perhaps emptying a bucket. See Tate D24503 (Turner Bequest CCLVIII 2v) for references to further figures studies made during this tour of France.
