Turner has inscribed one or both of these sketches ‘Buttes de Chaumont’, a former gypsum and limestone quarry (now a park) in the north-east of Paris from which the artist presumably made the sketch of the city at the top of the page. The view beneath depicts a hill with several windmills. Folio 28 verso (Tate D24554; Turner Bequest CCLVIII 28a) carries the inscription ‘Moulin Chermont’ (Chaumont windmill) next to several views of Paris.
For further sketches of Paris in this sketchbook, see folio 3 verso (Tate D24505; Turner Bequest CCLVIII 3a).
