Blind-stamped with the Turner Bequest monogram towards bottom right
Turner’s sketch shows Chamonix in its historic state, as little more than a village with a cluster of chalets which had nevertheless been attracting travellers, climbers and scientists for decades before 1802. For Turner, Newbey Lowson and their guide it served as a base for exploring the surrounding mountains and glaciers, the subjects of many drawings in this sketchbook.
