Blind-stamped with the Turner Bequest monogram bottom right
Turner passed through La Salle on his way down the Val d’Aosta. His label for this quite careful drawing, also numbered ‘26’, reads ‘Ville de Salle Valley d’Aoust’. He also listed ‘Ville de Salle’ twice among subjects commissioned, in hand or ‘done’ at the front of his album of 1802 drawings (see Technical notes to the Grenoble sketchbook, Tate, Turner Bequest LXXIV), and noted ‘7 Salle’ in a list of French and Swiss subjects on the back of a random pencil drawing (verso of Tate D08253; Turner Bequest CXX m).
