Given the character of the scenery in this slight sketch, inverted relative to the sketchbook’s foliation, it probably shows the meandering Tamar Valley, as seen on various adjacent pages. Finberg tentatively read the beginning of Turner’s inscription as ‘Park House’,1 while it is possible to interpret the last three words as ‘Horse and Hounds’, though this is very speculative, and neither reading has an immediately obvious local significance.
