Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Diana Cook and Dorothy Kirk have identified the scene as the Tamar Valley about six miles north-west of Gunnislake with Endsleigh Cottage, also shown on folio 129 verso and the recto of the present leaf (D09634, D09635); see the entry for D09634 for the situation and history of the house.1
Turner’s viewpoint is above the eastern, Devon bank of the Tamar near the Swiss cottage south-east of the house. This is a slightly more detailed repletion of the smaller sketch on the recto, and the Picturesque variety of the house’s gables and verandas is accurately (if swiftly) recorded.
