This is one of a number of studies of hulks (decommissioned, dismasted warships) interspersed with topographical sketches in the Hamoaze and lower reaches of the River Tamar north-west of Plymouth Sound between folio 3 recto (D09671) and here, where the left-hand vessel is shaded in silhouetted against strong light. There is a dark figure sitting at the bottom right, perhaps a Plymouth sketching companion of Turner’s. There is another such figure on folio 25 recto (D09697).
