Turner looks north from the ferry at Jupiter Point, with the entrance to Forder Lake and the Mill Pool to the right (now crossed by a bridge built originally for the Great Western Railway). The same view is shown on folio 34 recto (D09709), but at about half the scale, allowing the shore to the east to be shown. There is a view from within the small harbour at Antony Passage in the 1813 Plymouth Hamoaze sketchbook (Tate D09255; Turner Bequest CXXXI 36).
As noted in this sketchbook’s Introduction, local resident Mr Charles Nodder has used his knowledge of the area around Trematon Castle to write a privately circulated article discussing the relevant drawings in this sketchbook, after inspecting and discussing them with the present author,1 who is very grateful for his comments: the ‘massively enlarged Trematon Castle dominates the skyline whilst at water level we see the old lime kiln to the left, with Ferry House and the cottages behind the harbour’ in ‘a scene remarkably unchanged since Turner’s day’.2
For other views on and around the St Germans or Lynher River, see under folio 27 verso (D09700).
