Turner’s first inscription is unclear, but seems to refer to Wearde and the River Tamar, in the distance to the north-east in this view across the St Germans or Lynher River from Jupiter Point. As noted in this sketchbook’s Introduction, local resident Mr Charles Nodder has used his knowledge of the area around Trematon Castle to write a privately circulated article discussing the relevant drawings in this sketchbook, after inspecting and discussing them with the present author,1 who is very grateful for his comments: ‘Passage Point is at the left-hand side, with the buildings at Wearde Quay just left of centre. Beggars Island, which appears in other Turner sketches made from the Tamar side, is shown here just below the anchored ships’.2
Compare the view on folios 28 recto and 30 verso (D09701, D09705). For others on and around the St Germans or Lynher River, see under folio 27 verso (D09700).
