Dartmouth is seen in slightly more detail from a similar angle on folio 59 recto (D09743), although here Turner is on the bank of the River Dart at Kingswear rather than at the higher vantage point of that drawing. He looks north-west past the tower of St Saviour’s Church by the harbour, up the hill to St Clement’s Church on the horizon. There are also small variations on the present view on folio 57 verso (D09741).
This is the last of a sequence of views around Dartmouth and the Dart Estuary beginning on folio 50 recto (D09730), under which sketches made in 1811 are discussed.
