Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
At the centre of the wreath, inverted relative to the sketchbook’s foliation, is inscribed: ‘[...] | 31 – | 1818’. It is possible that the first word is ‘Dec’ overwritten with ‘Jany’ or vice versa, or some other combination of abbreviated months.
With the page turned vertically, the following pencil accounts run down from the gutter:
30 March paid Miss West   3 
15 April  ditto           7. – 10 
   Watson   23 April      –    10 
   Twitson.   12 Feby –         5 
The significance of the names and sums involved has yet to be determined.
