With the page turned horizontally, the viewpoint is Jennycliff Bay, south of Mount Batten, looking west-north-west. The profile of Mount Edgcumbe runs down to the entrance to the Hamoaze, with the tip of Devil’s Point on the Stonehouse side on the right. The drawing peters out below the skyline at the centre, with Drake’s Island barely indicated in Plymouth Sound. There is a general view from this direction on folio 59 recto (D09281), and a view of the adjacent coast to the south-west on folio 62 recto opposite (D09285). The subjects as far as folio 127 recto (D09358) are all identified or presumed sites within a few miles in and around Plymouth, suggesting a series of fairly short excursions.
