Looking west from the bridge on the Avon, Turner focuses on the river frontage of Warwick Castle, with Caesar’s Tower, the gatehouse and Guy’s Tower towards the right and the castle mill below. There appear to be two figures at the bottom right, albeit rather faint. The sketch informs the relevant section of the finished England and Wales watercolour discussed under the verso (D22047), part of a double-page sketch made from the same direction.
Technical notes:
The whole drawing has a rather faint, slightly rubbed appearance which may be a legacy of its having been extracted from the sketchbook and stuck down for the sake of displaying the verso (see the entry for D22047).
