Inverted relative to the sketchbook’s foliation, this view continues to the left across folio 70 recto opposite (D22107; Turner Bequest CCXXXVIII 68). It shows Dudley, apparently framed by the ruins of the castle’s barbican, looking south-west over the town, with most of its landmarks falling within the other page.
At the outer edge, with the page turned vertically, is a small sketch of the gateway and adjacent buildings then standing south of the barbican, which do not survive. The central gateway can be seen in the section of the main drawing on the opposite page, just below and to the right of St Edmund’s Church. There is a more detailed study on folio 72 recto (D22111; Turner Bequest CCXXXVIII 70).
For other views of Dudley see under folio 23 recto (D22016).
