Inverted relative to the sketchbook’s foliation, the pale figure of what seems to be a woman looks out of the shadows of a dark room or passageway, or she may be standing in front of a curtained bed, the setting for many other compositions in this book.
For a discussion of the improvisatory and often erotic nature of the watercolour studies making up most of this sketchbook, see the Introduction.
Technical notes:
The unaccessioned, blank recto is numbered in red ink ‘41’ and stamped ‘CCXCI(c) – 41’; it bears very slight watercolour offsetting from folio 40 verso (D28942).
