With rough pencil strokes, Turner has divided the page, turned vertically, into quarters, each of which contains at least one variation on landscape forms with hills, rocks and trees. Two include a small disk, presumably intended as the sun or moon. There may be a connection with the two watercolour landscapes on folios 51 verso and 52 verso (D28863, D28865). For other landscape studies towards the end of this sketchbook, see the Introduction.
Technical notes:
The edges are heavily stained owing to their proximity to the leather overlaps inside the back cover.
Verso:
Blank (marbled free endpaper).
