Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Folio 42 Verso:
Copy after Richard Wilson: The Bridge of Augustus at Rimini 1796–7
D01203
Turner Bequest XXXVII 86
Pencil with grey wash and white chalk on blue laid wrapping paper prepared with a red-brown wash, 113 x 93 mm
Stamped in black ‘XXXVII – 86’ top right, upside down

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Inverted relative to the sketchbook’s foliation, the composition continues across folio 43 recto opposite (D01204; Turner Bequest XXXVII 87). This is a memorandum, probably of the picture thought to have been in the collection of the then Prince of Wales (later George IV),1 apparently a companion to that copied by Turner on folios 38 verso–39 recto (D01195–D01196; Turner Bequest XXXVII 78–79). An alternative source might be the engraved version of this picture made by Joseph Farington and published by Boydell in 1776.
