The identification of this subject, drawn with the page turned horizontally, was made by Harry Madgwick. The Church of St Andrew at Bothal is a small Norman structure, hardly apparent in Turner’s drawing among the trees growing near the castle gateway which rears up behind it. Its belfry appears in the background of Turner’s view of Brock’s Burn on the preceding page of this book, folio 38 recto (D00943; Turner Bequest XXXIV 36).
