Turner’s study of the vaulted interior of the keep of Warkworth Castle (see also adjacent pages) was drawn over an outline of the castle from the north-west. Both drawings, made with the page turned horizontally, are somewhat perfunctory; Harry Madgwick conjectures that the exterior view was interrupted by a shower, from which the artist sheltered in the keep, where however the light was so poor that he could only produce a general outline.
