The subject is drawn with the page turned horizontally. The twelfth-century Norman castle, much altered over succeeding centuries, rises over an eight-acre site on a high bluff overlooking the Farne Islands, a wild and romantic stretch of the grand Northumberland coast. Turner made three drawings of it on this tour, though he did not develop any of them until much later in his career. The others are folios 51 recto and 52 recto (D00956, D00957; Turner Bequest XXXIV 48, 49). See D00957 for a note on the use Turner later made of the subject.
