The subject is drawn with the page turned horizontally. The view is taken from outside the Bull and Swan Inn on the Great North Road, looking north towards All Saints, St Martin’s and St Mary’s Churches. Turner shifted his position as he drew in order to include all the churches in a single image. This was apparently not a subject required by Benjamin Howlett for his Select Views in the County of Lincoln (see under folio 88 recto; D00994; Turner Bequest XXXIV 83), but Turner made a finished watercolour based on this drawing for the England and Wales series in about 1828 (Usher Art Gallery, Lincoln),1 which was engraved in 1830 (Tate impressions: T04557, T06088).
