Hawse End is on the edge of Derwentwater, at the northern end of Brandlehow Park; see the immediately preceding page, folio 36 recto (D01026; Turner Bequest XXXV 24); this view, made with the page turned horizontally, looks across the lake to St Herbert’s Island, with Castlerigg Fell in the background. As Turner scholar David Hill observes, the brief note recording a ‘perfect reflection’ in the water suggests calm weather at the end of the day, though there is enough precise detail in this drawing to contradict his suggestion that by this stage of Turner’s day excursion to Borrowdale and back to Keswick the light had faded.
