Drawn with the page turned horizontally, the view is taken from above Side Cottages, looking across to Side Farm and the lake.
The present author, supported by Turner scholar David Hill,1 proposed that another view at Patterdale, showing the Old Hall seen from below Side Farm, now in the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge,2 is a leaf that belongs to this part of the sketchbook.
