A view of the bridge from the other side is on the preceding leaf, folio 60 recto (D01048; Turner Bequest XXXV 46). Drawn with the page turned horizontally, the hills at the left are Glenridding Screes and, beyond, Sheffield Pike. Turner scholar David Hill suggests that the colour washes record an effect of light observed by Turner at the beginning of the day, and points out the travellers on the road who may be on their way to market or a day’s work in Ambleside or Kirkstone.
Technical notes:
The leaf is discoloured from exposure, except where formerly protected by a mount; the bottom right corner has been torn and repaired.
